24fps Exclusive: Theatrical poster and trailer for Kelvin Tong’s ‘Rule #1’

Mediacorp Raintree Pictures, the production company behind Kelvin Tong’s new horror ‘Rule #1,’ have given us an exclusive first look at the theatrical poster and trailer for this very promising frightener. ‘Rule #1’ traces the chilling stories uncovered by the Police Force's emergency calls centre. Everyday the centre receives 185 phone calls, 180 of them are about felonies, murders, robberies and kidnappings. The other five begin with "there's something strange in my house”

Singapore born Tong’s previous work includes the J-Horror ‘1942’ and his most well known (outside Asia) film too date ‘The Maid.’ ‘Rule’ stars Shawn Yue, Ekin Cheng, and Fiona Xie. The pic opens in Malaysia and Singapore on March 13th, followed by Hong Kong (which means an English friendly DVD release!) shortly after.

Synopsis: Rookie Sergeant Lee (Yue) is injured in a shoot-out and is assigned to the dubious- sounding Miscellaneous Affairs Department (MAD). There, he is paired up with Inspector Wong (Cheng), a jaded and alcoholic veteran who explains that MAD's role is to answer supernatural calls. Wong explains MAD's rule number one - there are no ghosts. For every seemingly-inexplicable phenomenon, there is a corresponding scientific and rational explanation. MAD begins investigating a string of bizarre teenage suicides... impossible suicides, unless the victims were possessed. As Lee and Wong follow the clues, they realize something sinister is heading their way.

Indy Zombie horror 'Automaton Transfusion' hits R1 DVD

It has to be said we aren't liking many of the covers Dimension are putting out on their 'Extreme' label DVD's. We are however loving what films they are releasing. Next out on the label is Steven C. Millers low budget, but great looking, Zombie gore fest 'Automaton Transfusion.'

Synopsis: In the early 1970s when everyone in America was worrying about what was going on in Vietnam, the United States Army was secretly developing a way to reanimate the dead. The hope was to have the dead fight instead of the living, but the experiments were shut down when the reanimated corpses were unable to control their hunger for human flesh. Thirty years later the army has decided to reopen the project. Grover City, because of its remote location, would be the home of their main testing facilities. Without warning the experiments go horribly wrong in Grover City and the DEAD are now on the rampage, eating everyone in sight. With the town overtaken by Zombies, a group of High School seniors take it upon themselves to fight back and find a cure for this deadly disease. The four friends battle their way through swamps, forests, blood, and ZOMBIES to survive!

Voted 7th in Fango's top 10 horror pics of 2006, Automatons slick looks belie its small budget origins. 'Automaton Transfusion' is released on March 4th.

U.S. character posters for Takashi Miike's 'Sukiyaki Western Django'

IGN have got their hands on the first U.S. character posters for Takashi Miike's madcap Japanese Spaghetti western, 'Sukiyaki Western Django.' Performed entirely in heavily Japanese accented English, the film story centers on 2 gangs struggling over control of a 19th century Japanese frontier town.

Chock full of hugely over the top action/fight scenes & majorly campy performances, it all looks utterly fantastic.Theres still no sigh of a U.S. website or a theatrical release date, but these posters give us some hope that there will actually be (probally very limited) one soon.

Haunted houses, haunted cars, now how about a haunted Ambulance?!

Full marks have to be given to the Indonesian film industry for attempts at pushing a genre too it's credible (and beyond) limits. The latest bizarre creation to come out of the country is the horror movie 'Hantu (Hantu meaning Ghost) Ambulance.' Directed by Koya Pagayo the pic stars Suzzanna, Dimaz Andrean, Fitri Ayu, Cliff Sangra & Ratna Galih.

Indonesia’s queen of horror Suzzanna plays Widya, a doting grandmother who is willing to cover her family’s terrifying past to protect her beloved grandson, Rano. However, Widya’s effort takes its toll when they move to Bandung and stay in an old house, where a ghost in form of an ambulance keeps murdering people around Rano. Curses must be broken, & Rano, despite his grandmother’s pleas, decides to fight the ghost by himself, even at the risk being killed.

So just your typical common or garden horror blood bath, with a haunted, killer, emergency vehicle on the loose. It's so out there, it looks like it actually might work. To decide for yourself, you can view a trailer on the films website. 'Hantu Ambulance' opened in Indonesia this week. Source

Sequel to 'The Slit-mouthed Woman' (aka Kuchisake-Onna) on the way

According to the guys at Tokyograph, last years Japanese horror hit "Kuchisake-Onna" aka ‘The Slit mouthed Woman’ is to get a sequel. The main plot will be more a prequel to the first movie, dealing with the origins of the Slit mouthed woman. Sixteen year old actress Rin Asuka will take the lead as high school girl Mayumi, whose face is disfigured by a attack with acid, leading to her becoming a Demon Ghost. More surprising is the fact that the movie has apparently been completed already. Do we perhaps detect a low budget rush job, to cash in on the success of the first film? We shall see. 'Kuchisake-Onna 2' opens in Japan in March.

'The Backwoods' (aka Bosque De Sombras) finally reaches DVD

Great news. Spanish horror thriller 'The Backwoods' (Bosque De Sombras) starring Gary Oldman, is finally making its way to R1 DVD.

Set in the Summer of 1978 'The Backwoods' tells the story of an English couple Lucy (Virginie Ledoyen) and Norman (Paddy Considine) who are going through a difficult patch in their relationship. They decide to spend some time at the house that their friends Paul (Gary Oldman) and his wife Isabel (Aitana Sanchez-Gijón) have bought in the north of Spain. Hidden away in the middle of a forest, and very much off the beaten track, the house seems ideal for some peaceful holidays. Their tranquil summer turns to horror when they discover a girl with horribly mutilated hands in a house in the forest. The locals aren't happy with the outsiders interference and for taking the girl from the house, and soon cultural differences start a whirlpool of violence between them.

'The Backwoods' has received mixed reviews, but we'd say it should be worth a watch, even just to see Oldman (who rarely disappoints with a performance) in action.

'Body #19 ' in Taiwan

Thai horror 'Body # 19' is to get a release in Tawain. The main interest in the release is that it could mean that we will finally get a chance to see this great looking film with English subs, as Taiwanese DVD releases often have them. The Thai DVD of the movie was sadly (a lot dont) lacking them. Directed by first timer Paween Purijitpanya, 'Body' stars Arak Amornsupasiri and Ornjira Lamwilai.

Synopsis: "A human being contains 5 liters of blood, 6 pounds of skin, 206 bones, 600 muscles, and 35 million glands. It takes a human body more than 25 years of life to grow such things. But one man actually believes he can rid himself of every single piece of human flesh by just using scissors and a small surgical blade. And he is going to prove it. Chon, a med student, starts seeing a psychotherapist after he dreams about a woman who he had only met once in a restaurant.

In his dreams, a mysterious man murders her, slices her body into pieces, and flushes them down a toilet one by one. The murderous dreams haunt him into his waking memory, and eventually he feels as if his own body is being dissected and carved up by the surgical knife. Slowly, the terrifying images take control of him. He comes to believe that the dead woman is sending him messages through these nightmares. But these are not messages for him, they are meant for her murderer. They speak of revenge, and say: "I am still here."

For a trailer, check out the still active official Thai site for the film. Or theres a link to one on Youtube. 'Body' opens in Taiwan in March. Fingers crossed for an English friendly DVD soon after.

Horror movie about a Japanese schoolgirl fighting Zombie hordes with a BIG sword? Yes please!

From the (in our view seeing this, genius) mind of director Kenichi Fujiwara comes 'Ultimate weapon high school girl: Rika.' A truly nuts looking Zombie horror flick about a sword wielding, undead killing, high school girl 'Rika.'

'The film has only just opened in Japan, and looks to us like an independent production, which is probably why we didn't pick it up on the Radar earlier. The pic stars Risa Kudowith Tsugumi Nagasawa, Mai Minami and Takeshi Yamamoto. As yet we haven't been able to nail down a trailer, but what we have found are some great stills from the film. Official site for Mexican supernatural thriller ‘El Ultimo Justo’

We first covered news on Manuel Carballo’s supernatural thriller ‘El Último de los justos’ aka ‘The last of the just’ way back in January 07. Bill Rovzar, who was the man behind the excellent Spanish/Mexican horror 'Kilómetro 31' is producing, so we thought thought it well worth keeping an eye on. The movie stars Diego Martín, Ana Talancón, and Antonio Dechent. The site has all the usual fare, the main point of interest being a far better quality trailer for the film than previously seen. ‘El Último Justos’ opens in Spain February 29th.

Synopsis: “At 35 years of age, Teo Arroyo's life is unremarkable and uneventful, until one day he becomes the victim of an inexplicable murder attempt and of an even more bewildering rescue. For years a secret struggle has kept two mysterious armies in constant conflict, their war based on a belief in the existence of "the Just", men whose survival is essential to setting in motion the Final Judgement. Both armies act in the name of good but have opposing goals. One aims at protecting the "just", thereby saving humanity, while the other strives to eliminate them, in order to achieve mankind's regeneration. After long years of battle and conflict, only one of the "just" remains: Teo. Oblivious to the significance of his life, Teo has no choice but to run for it, with both assassins and saviors hot on his heels."

'Legend of the Black Scorpion' aka 'The Banquet' on R1 DVD

Dragon Dynasty are to release Feng Xiaogang’s stunningly beautiful wuxia epic ‘The Banquet,’ on R1 DVD. Quite why they have decided to re-name the movie with the title 'Legend of the Black Scorpion' eludes us, but the fact that its actually being released is reason enough for celebration.

Loosely based on Shakespeare's Hamlet, the story is set in ancient China during the period of Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms. Against the backdrop of internal turmoil and external threat poised by the neighboring Khitan Empires, lives Empress Wan (Zhang Ziyi ). As beautiful as she is deadly, she harbors forbidden desires for her stepson Crown Prince Wu Luan (Daniel Wu). When the Emperor dies of reasons undetermined and his younger brother Li takes the throne, Wan marries Li to protect Wu Luan and seal her own position in the ruling body. But Li is not a fool and dispatches assassins that ultimately fail to kill Wu Luan. When Emperor Li proclaims a big banquet, Wu Luan and Wan realize it is time to strike.

‘The Banquet’ isn't an all out martial arts action pic. In style Banquet is much more 'House of Flying Daggers' or 'Curse of the Golden Flower,' so if those weren't your cup of Java, this wont be for you. However, if jaw dropping cinematography, sumptuous sets, costumes and stunningly choreographed fight scenes are your thing, then 'The Banquet/Scorpion' is a must see. Released as a two-disc Ultimate Edition, the DVD streets on February 26th.

Meanwhile, C, the murder victims former boyfriend becomes involved in the case when he begins to search for his lost ex-girlfriend. 'Shinobi' finally arrives on UK R2 DVD!

Great news for UK genre fans. Ten Shimoyama's martial arts epic 'Shinobi,' finally arrives on your shores on DVD through Optimum releasing. Now, it has to be said we think this film absolutely rocks, so we'll try to provide you with all the facts without gushing too profusely.

Synopsis: For centuries there lived warriors of darkness with strange powers and arcane skills, living only for battle. They were the Shinobi. The year is 1614 and Japan has been united under the first Shogun. Peace is returning to the land after many years of war. Even the Koga and the Iga, Ninja tribes and bitterest of foes have been bound to live in peace. That is, however, until the nefarious Shogun hatches a plan to rid his kingdom of their power forever. He plots a battle- five Ninja from each Village must fight to the death until just one victorious Ninja survives and has then earned the right to name the next Shogun. Caught in the crossfire of imperial plotting and family honour are Gennosuke (Joe Odagiri) and Oboro (Yukie Nakama) who have fallen deeply in love despite being the heirs of the warring tribes. Their tragic fate is to decide whether to live in honor, or love. With no concern for the star crossed lovers the order forbidding conflict is lifted, the elders choose their best Ninjas and the stage is set for a battle to end all battles.

While there are definite Romeo and Juliet elements to 'Shinobi,' that in no way means it’s lacking in action. The love story acts mainly as a backdrop to the main back plot of unresolved hatred between two ninja clans. It is that hatred that finally erupts into in all out war. With some spectacular effects, and superbly choreographed fight sequences, this is a must for fans of the genre. ‘Shinobi goes on sale today.

Russian horror 'Dead Daughters': Review

Mark, from 'Black Hole Reviews,' guides us a through the 2007 Russian Horror, 'DEAD DAUGHTERS.'

Dead Daughters is a recent horror film that’s part of the push to get Russia back into the international market (like Day Watch and Apocalypse Code). That’s not to say that it's surrendered any of its Russian-ness, but been too obviously influenced by Japanese and US horror. Even so, surprise, surprise, the remake rights have already been bought in the US.

Naturally, the template seems to be Ring, with a simple set of supernatural rules, a short deadline, and scary girls with long black hair…

Vera is waiting in her car when a dishevelled stranger jumps in and threatens to hurt her if she doesn’t drive off immediately. He says that he’s being chased by the ghosts of three murdered children who will kill him if he does anything bad. Vera listens to his story but wisely takes the opportunity to dump him. She later tells five friends about the madman’s ghost story, not realising that he died soon after, & the dead daughters are now watching her every move....

First details on Dog Bite Dog director Soi Cheang's new film: 'Assassins'

With his crime thriller ‘Dog bite Dog,’ followed soon after by the equally violent fight pic ‘Shamo,’ Hong Kong director Soi Cheang has a recent track record for making uncompromisingly raw, dark and some might say vicious films.

So can we expect more of the same from his upcoming project ‘Assassins.’ Detail on the film is still a little sketchy, but it sure looks that way so far. Aside from a brief plotline, we do know it will star two action pic veterans Louis Koo (Flashpoint, Protégé) and Richie Jen (Exiled). With Cheang at the helm, and the Class A cast, we could be in for real (and just a wee bit volent) treat.

Synopsis: When the facilitator and mastermind behind the intricate plots and designs of their operations is locked up by the special police force, a group of assassins who normally work independently and anonymously must get acquainted with each other for the first time, in order to coordinate their efforts for rescuing their one and only friend.

'Kuntilanak 3' on the way

Helmer Rizal Mantovani returns to direct, while local star Julie Estelle reprises her role as Samantha, a women cursed with the ability to summon at will the she-devil Kuntilanak.

While Indonesian horror pics cant always be accused of being high end in their production values, the casts usually perform their roles with gusto, and theres always the occasional gem to be found. Co starring with Estelle are: Ida Iasha, Cyndi Valerie, Mandala Abadi Shoji and Imelda Therine.

Synopsis: A group of students are looking for their lost friend and her fiancée when they meet Samantha. Samantha is on a mission: she is looking for a shaman in a remote village of Ujung Sedo to abolish her ability in calling a she-devil called Kuntilanak. Yet, Samantha has no idea that the power of the shaman and the Kuntilanak are far stronger than she can handle. The students, Samantha, and even her mother (Ida Iasha) are left with little of survival fighting against these evil powers.

First promotional image from Roy Lim's 'Untold Beauty'

A first promotional pic is out for MediaCorp Raintree Pictures new production ‘Untold Beauty.’ Billed as a supernatural horror, the film marks several firsts for Singaporean cinema. It is the debut film from writer-director Roy Lim. It is also the first ever Singaporean movie to mount an exposé of the little-known post-mortem and embalming profession. Untold Beauty imagines love, loss, and death through the story of a Chinese embalmer who has a numb attitude toward death until his girlfriend becomes fatally ill.

Working with a S$1 million budget, Lim said: "The biggest challenge in 'Untold Beauty' is the fact that I want to make a Chinese film – a Chinese story that happens in a Chinese community. Nothing that is too distinctively Singaporean. Not that I'm not proud of Singapore, but I just want to tell a simple Chinese community movie."

Taiwanese actor Wing Fan Chih Wei, a best actor nominee at the Golden Horse Awards, plays the lead alongside local star Jesseca Liu. ‘ Beauty’ will be released in the third quarter of 2008.

First pics from British action thriller ‘The Tournament’

Some stills have surfaced for Scott Mann’s hard core action crime thriller ‘The Tournament.’ Reasons we're excited about this movie….
The cast: Robert Carlyle, Ving Rhames , Ian Somerhalder, Kelly Hu, Sebastien Foucan, and Liam Cunningham.

The story: Every ten years in an unsuspecting town, 'The Tournament' takes place. A battle royale between 40 of the world's deadliest assassins, with the last man (or woman) standing receiving the $10,000,000 cash prize and the title of Worlds No 1 which itself, carries the legendary million dollar bullet price tag. All fights are monitored 24 hours a day on redirected CCTV camera and broadcast secretly to a ring of high stake billionaire gamblers. 'The Tournament' brings together international killers from every imaginable discipline in a blood-bathed contest to the death. We follow the 'favourites' through stories of love, betrayal, revenge and redemption as they finally discover the value of life.

All that, coupled with the fact that the film is being produced by Keith Bell (‘Dog Soldiers,’ ‘The Decent'), tends to make us think this is going to be more than just a lil bit bloody. Still in post-production, ‘The Tournament' is currently tipped to open in UK Cinemas in April.

'Red Cliff' trailer!

A trailer is out for John Woo's massively expensive and much anticipated historical action movie 'The Battle Of Red Cliff.' Word is that the movie is now so long, Woo plans to split the epic into two films. Hows it looking? Pretty damn lush so far we'd say. Judge for your yourself, from the link below. Source
