First
stills from Malaysian horror ‘Susuk’
We
first reported on the Malay horror ‘Susuk’ well
over a year ago. The film was originally due to open in 2007,
then for some reason production stalled, and everything went
very quiet. Now with the project apparently back on track,
some first stills from the film have arrived online, and we
can finally get a look. As far as we can tell the movie is
due out in Malaysia this spring. Here's some gen on the film,
from the official site.
"Su·suk"
(noun) The forbidden practice of inserting and embedding foreign
objects such as gold, silver, and diamonds under a person's
skin in order to increase the person's allure.
Synopsis:
"Beauty has a price. Soraya is a young trainee nurse
who feels disaffected by her life. A chance introduction to
the world of glamour piques her earlier ambition to be a star.
She does not succeed at first, but she is told that the forbidden
practice of susuk can help. She has to make a choice whether
to stay the way she is, or cross the line... Meanwhile, Suzana
is a prominent diva with an air of mystery. She has long been
a practitioner of the black arts due to her use of the extreme
susuk keramat. Every time she violates a taboo, a human life
is required. We follow the eventful lives of these two women
until we get to the true secret of this dreaded charm."

French
frightener 'Ils' aka 'Them': Review
Friend of the site Mark, from 'Black Hole Reviews,' gives
us his thoughts on the stylish French Horror 'Them.'
There
haven't been many French horror films until recently. This
is one of the 'new wave' of hard-hitting and effective genre
movies from France, like Switchblade Romance (aka Haute Tension),
The Ordeal (Calvaire) and even Brotherhood of the Wolf. It’s
received quite a decent release worldwide, considering it’s
a low-budget movie shot on video, and has been reviewed extensively,
but I'd like to add the following...
A French couple have settled down in a large remote house
on the outskirts of Bucharest, while teaching French in a
Romanian high school. Little do they know, there's been a
mysterious murder nearby, and at night it’s their turn
to be victimised, frightened, then hunted…

"Caught in a massive storm that throws them off course,
a young couple are stranded on a remote island where they
seek refuge in an abandoned farmhouse. Once there, they soon
realize they are not alone and are being held hostage by a

Blank’s most well know work to date was the teen horror

French
horror 'ILs' aka 'Them' on DVD
French

First
poster for dark horror comedy 'The Cottage'
A
great first poster is out for British horror comedy 'The Cottage.'
Directed by Paul Andrew Williams the film stars Andy Serkis,
and Steven O'Donnell & Reece Shearsmith.
Synopsis:
In the dead of night, a car arrives at a secluded country
cottage. Bickering constantly, brothers David and Peter climb
out to inspect the hideaway. It seems just perfect for their
plans. Although barely on speaking terms, the pair have set
aside their differences for a quick moneymaking scheme, the
kidnapping of mob boss Arnie's daughter, who they plan to
hold to ransom. Tracey (Jennifer Ellison), bound, gagged and
unconscious, is locked in the trunk of the car.
Aiding
them in their ploy is Tracey's black sheep step-brother Andrew.
Screaming threats and violent insults, Tracey fights like
a wildcat and the hapless trio begin to panic and argue amongst
themselves-totally unaware that Andrew was followed. Outside,
two of Arnie's most feared henchmen are already circling the
cottage.
With
Arnie on his way and the game almost up, Tracey turns the
tables on her captors and, with Peter as her hostage, escapes
through the nearby woods seeking refuge in a remote farmhouse
in the hope of finding a telephone to alert her father. As
David and Andrew close in on her trail, they soon discover
something far more terrifying is lurking in the darkness,
The Farmer, a monstrous, blood-thirsty serial killer, and
the stage is set for a grotesquely comic battle for survival.
Great
stuff. This we are looking forward too! 'The Cottage' opens

Variety
Reviews Peter Chan's ‘The Warlords’
Varieties
Derek Elley gives us the low down on Peter Chan’s historical
blockbuster ‘The
Warlords.’ And you know what, we think he kinda
likes it.
“Three blood brothers find their oath tested by battle
and personal rivalry in "The Warlords," a meaty
drama of friendship, ambition and betrayal set during a bloody
civil war in 19th-century China. Laden with gritty action,
but with an emotional undertow that carries the drama even
through its weaker moments, pic reps a strong comeback by
Hong Kong helmer-producer Peter Chan after his wobbly musical
"Perhaps Love" and provides Jet Li with a satisfying
non-chopsocky showcase. Platforming at a major European fest
could provide the nudge this $40 million blockbuster needs
for Western sales.
Since
its mid-December release in Chinese-speaking East Asia, pic
has already notched up socko business, grossing over $35 million
in China alone, plus a comparable amount offshore. In the
West, it's more of a specialist item, with none of the operatic
visuals of Zhang Yimou's recent martial-arts epics and no
flashy wire-fu to attract a broader demographic….”

SONG
Il-gon's new Horror to shoot this spring
Korean
helmer Song Il-gon is in pre-production on his latest project,
a historical horror set in the Joseon Dynasty. The film is
being budgeted at around US$4 million and is titled ‘Sahwa’
– meaning 'royal massacre'. No word on who will star
in the feature and casting is currently ongoing.
The
production company behind the film is Masulpiri Co. which
produced "Family Matters" (2006), "A Tale of
Two Sisters" (2003), and Jeong Jae-eun's "Take Care
of My Cat" (2001).
‘Sahwa’
is about a bloody power game between rival families. When
the Park family massacres the Shin family, and takes the throne,
a child, Wan, is born to them that very same night of the
killings. Seven years later, an attack on the king's family
leaves everyone but young Wan dead. Wan grows deadly ill,
and the king tries to save him but curses, strange happenings,
and mysterious murders draw nearer.
The film
will be SONG's fourth feature, following the critical success
of "The Magicians" (2006), "Feathers in the
Wind" (2005), the atmospheric "Spider Forest"
(2004) and his award-winning debut, "Flower Island"
(2001). Filming on "Sahwa" is expected to start
late-March. [Source]

Upcoming
Spanish horror 'Intrusos en Manasés'
There
have been some fantastic horror movies coming out of Spain
recently, so when word of upcoming chiller ‘Intrusos
en Manasés’ aka ‘Intruders into Manasés’
came in, we took notice. Here’s what we know so far.
The film is directed by Juan Carlos Claver & stars Miguel
Ángel Munoz, Marina Gatell and Juan Fernadez. Aside
from the roll call of cast and crew, we have also tracked
down an intriguing plotline for the film.
Synopsis:"
Julia is an investigative journalist who works for "Paranormal"
publication that reports on supernatural events. Despite not
believing in the paranormal, Julia one day has a shocking
and inexplicable experience. Witnessing a woman’s suicide
from a high window, she plainly sees the figure surrounding
by ghostly forms as it falls. Following the terrible death
Julia’s life is turned around completely.
She
finds that she can now feel certain presences. Sometimes,
if the force of an environment is sufficiently powerful she
can even "see" the past. In 1945, the inhabitants
of a small village called Manasés mysteriously disappeared.
Today, sixty years later, Julia, Robert, Ruben and Syra travel
to Manasés to take pictures and record what is left
of this ruined and oddly dead place. Why did its inhabitants
abandoned it so suddenly? And what made them run?

Japanese
official site for John Woo's 'Red Cliff' now live
The
official Japanese site for John Woo's HUGELY expensive and
much anticipated historical action movie 'The Battle Of Red
Cliff,' is now online. There's not much on there as yet, and
no (dammit) trailer to be seen, but its definitely one to
keep an eye on for updates.
The
plot: In 208 A.D., in the final days of the Han Dynasty, shrewd
Prime Minster Cao convinced the fickle Emperor Han the only
way to unite all of China was to declare war on the kingdoms
of Xu in the west and East Wu in the south. Thus began a military
campaign of unprecedented scale, led by the Prime Minister,
himself.
Left
with no other hope for survival, the kingdoms of Xu and East
Wu formed an unlikely alliance. Numerous battles of strength
and wit ensued, both on land and on water, eventually culminating
in the battle of Red Cliff. During the battle, two thousand
ships were burned, and the course of Chinese history was changed
forever.
With
it's massive budget, stellar cast and truely monumental set
pieces, it's pretty much a cert that 'Red Cliff' is going
to be a huge hit. Now in lengthy post production, the pic

Satoshi
Kon's PAPRIKA: Review
Friend
of the site Mark from Black
Hole Reviews gives us his take on Satoshi Kon's visually
stunning Anime 'Paprika.'
PAPRIKA
(Japan)
"Satashi Kon - Miyazaki for grown-ups. This has justifiably
been gaining glowing reviews after appearing at festivals
around the world. It’s the most accessible anime feature
film since Spirited Away. It retains a very Japanese identity,
but is easily understandable by western audiences. The film
is brimfull with imagination, compemented by a fantastically
apt use of animation to visualise the impossible.
While
many productions focus on portraying schoolrooms and street
scenes realistically, why not just try and push the narrative
medium to the limit. The eye-boggling portrayal of dreams and
dream-logic is a crazy challenge for most directors, but Satoshi
Kon has been rehearsing for this in his previous animated
projects. The story is about some (fairly fantastical) technology
built to enable psychologists...."

Japanese
horror 'Exte: Hair Extensions' hits English subtitled DVD!!
What
a great start to the new year. Sion Sono's (director of Suicide
Club) weird and wacky ‘Exte,’ a horror film
about killer hair extensions no less, is now available on
English subtitled DVD. If the bizarre premise wasn't reason
enough to want to see it, there's a second. The movie stars
one of our favourite Japanese actresses Chiaki Kuriyama, best
known in the west as the psychopathic schoolgirl Go
Go, in Tarantino's 'Kill Bill.'
Synopsis:
"What if extensions carried the grudge of the individual
to which the hair originally belonged too and started attacking
people wearing them at random? Customs agents discover a huge
amount of human hair used as materials for 'hair extensions'
along with the dead body of a young girl with a shaved head.
The results of the autopsy determine that the woman's internal
organs have been harvested. The possibility is that she was
kidnapped in some foreign country and was a victim of black
market human organ smuggling ring."
