date of Russian horror "Viy" drops back to 2008
According
to the Russian film site 'Kino-Express' the release date for
the Russian horror ‘Viy’ has been put back from
November 07 to March 2008! We’ve
not been able to find out yet exactly why the date has moved,
but it does mean a Cinema (outside Russia) release, or an
English subbed DVD are even further away.
For those who aren't familiar with the film here's the Synopsis:
“Cartographer Jonathan Green undertakes a scientific
voyage from Europe to the East. Having passed through Transylvania
and crossed the Carpathian Mountains, he finds himself in
a small village lost in impassible woods. Nothing but chance
and heavy fog could bring him to this cursed place. People
who live here do not resemble any other people which the traveler
saw before that.
The
villagers, having dug a deep moat to fend themselves from
the rest of the world, share a naive belief that they could
save themselves from evil, failing to understand that evil
has made its nest in their souls and is waiting for an opportunity
to gush out upon the world. Even in his worst nightmares our
scientist could not suppose that he was going to meet the
devil’s most faithful servant.”
So
it seems we shall have to wait even longer to get

First ever Ukrainian horror "The Pit"
“The

by Lyubomyr Kobylchuk, the movie stars Sergiy Stasko (Bita),
Svitlana Artamonova (Vicky), Pavlo Lee (Den), Olga Storozhuk

Here

find the lost entrance to the pit which was a myth among the
scientists. Disregarding evil omens they meet the students
decide to descend underground and discover its mystery. But
they don't know there are things one shouldn't search...”
The
movie was apparently shot entirely in a huge series of abandoned
military bunkers, and has the sound (thrash guitar soundtrack
included) and look of your usual teen survival horror. But
considering it cost a tiny $800,000, it doesn't look half

Korean
actioner "Typhoon" to get UK cinema release
‘Taepung’
aka 'Typhoon' was first released in Korean in 2005. Directed
by Kwak Kyung-taek and starring Jang Dong-kun, Jung-Jae Lee,
Mi-yeon Lee, the film in its time was one of the most expensive
made in Korean. Now the big budget action flick is to get
a UK cinema release through distributor Contender Entertainment.
Synopsis:”
A vessel is attacked by pirates 220 km northeast of Ji Long
Port, Taiwan. The National Intelligence Service dispatches
a secret agent after obtaining information that the vessel
was carrying nuclear missile guidance kits stolen by a man
named Sin. Sin has lived his entire life with one goal --
to destroy the Korean peninsula. With the missile guidance
kits in his possession, he attempts to execute his plan. Twenty
years ago, his family tried to defect to South Korea, only
to be sent back to the North as the South Korean government
turned its back on his family due to concerns over its relationship
with China.
In the
process of being handed over to the North Korean military,
Sin witnesses the execution of his family followed by the
separation from his only sister, Choi Myung-ju. As a result,
Sin fosters deep-rooted hatred and fury. Meanwhile Naval Lieutenant
Kang Se-jong is sent on a secret mission to find Sin, finally
catching up with him in Russia and learns of the family's
troubled history. Kang Se-jong meets Sin's elder sister Choi
Myung-ju, now a prostitute in Russia and learns of the family's
troubled history. During his pursuit, Kang Se-jong begins
to feel compassion for Sin, but this does not hinder upon
his mission to apprehend him”
The film
did pretty good business on its theatrical release in the
U.S. and it will be interesting to see how it fairs with audiences
in the UK. A great trailer is available to watch on the Korean
version of the official site. The down side is that its an
incredibly glitchy and annoying embedded flash version. We've
included a backup trailer link, in case of viewing problems.
“Typhoon" opens on a limited release in the UK,
April 27th.

Horror
from the Philippines "White Lady"
It’s
been out for a while, but we thought it worth a mention as
horror films from the Philippines are still quite a rarity.
Released in its home country in July of last year the movie
is to get a second airing, as it’s due to open in Malaysia
on March 22nd. “White Lady” was directed by Jeff
Tan, and stars Boots Anson-Roa, Angelica Panganiban, Pauleen
Luna and Gian Carlos.
Synopsis:
”Set largely in the dark and eerie campus of the Arts
Academy, “White Lady's” story centres on Pearl,
a simple and smart girl from the province who has just arrived
in the city to study, and the clique of students led by Mimi,
a pretty, rich and popular girl who gets by through bullying
others.
For
reasons she cannot explain nor understand, Pearl is haunted
by the ghost of a white lady said to be frequenting the school
grounds. Intrigued and determined to solve the mystery, she
decides to explore and hears about the story of Christina,
a girl driven to hiding by Mimi’s bullying. Pearl immediately
feels an affinity towards Christina, being on the receiving
end of Mimi’s pranks herself.
The haunting
worsens when Pearl lands the highly-coveted lead role in the
school play. In a series of intense ghostly appearances, the
white lady manifests herself to the “in” group,
letting them experience her wrath one by one. Pearl is caught
in the middle of it all. Later on she discovers a deadly and
horrifying secret that connects her, her schoolmates and the
white lady that terrorizes their school.” 'White

The
first real (if small) look at what we might expect from the
Thai epic fantasy “The Queen of Langkasuka,” has
arrived in the form of some new stills on the movies production

to dwarf this years big seller in Thailand “King
Narusan.”
Directed
by Nonzee
Nimibutr, and featuring Ananda Everingham star of the
excellent Thai Horror 'Shutter'
the film is said to feature ambitious sequences such as CGI-enhanced
underwater fights, magical adventures with giant whales and
deep-sea creatures. If that wasn't enough, there is also talk
of huge cannon battles among the warring parties, and locations
as disparate as sea gypsy villages and pirate gunships. Fantastic!

"Lethal
Ninja" heads to Japan
Ever
so slightly cheesy Hong Kong actioner “Lethal Ninja”
is to get a release in Japan. The movie is directed by Herman
Yau who has tackled nearly every film genre known to man,
from exploitation, to urban satire. Lethal Ninja is another
notch on the belt of the versatile director, but it perhaps
won’t go down in history as one of his best. Lethal
Ninja is loaded with nifty ninja mysticism and more than a
touch of campy martial arts action.
Synopsis:”
Eva Huang (Kung Fu Hustle) is Xiao Ling, a super-cute ninja
who works with her master (Eddy Ko) to protect a street musician
named Copy (Dayo Wong). Evil mastermind Brian (Waise Lee)
suspects that Copy holds the key to opening a mysterious red
box that contains "Jinrui", which is said to cure
any disease known to man. Brian intends to use Jinrui to manufacture
a cure-all drug and make a ton of cash on the market, and
enlists an army of ninjas to aid him. Xiao Ling wants Copy
alive, but fellow ninja Hibiki (Shirata Hisako) is willing
to kill Copy to keep the secret safe. The two female ninjas
find themselves at odds, but when Brian's ninjas snatch Copy,
the two must join forces. Can Xiao and Hibiki use their deadly
ninja arts to save Copy and prevent Jinrui from falling into
enemy hands?." 'Lethal

Serbian
Zombie horror "Zona mrtvih" aka "Zone of the
Dead"
Well
this is new! Perhaps not content to let their neighbour Russia
corner the horror film market in Eastern Europe and beyond,
Serbian film studio 'Talking Wolf' is to release
a Zombie survival movie of their very own. “Zone of
the Dead” is directed by Milan Todorovic and stars Vojislav
Brajovic, Dragan Nikolic, Vukota Brajovic and Miodrag Krstovic.
Surprisingly the movie will be filmed almost entirely in English.
Here
is the synopsis taken form the production studios website…..:
“In the industrial town of Pancevo, after the incident
at the railway station, a dangerous biochemical toxin becomes
airborne in the middle of the night, poisoning the inhabitants.
The infection spreads all over the town and it seems like
the Armageddon is happening.
Meanwhile,
a police-escorted prisoner transport supervised by Interpol
sets off from Vršac to Belgrade. On Interpol's request,
transport is joined by an experienced detective Dragan Vukovic,
who decided to transfer to a desk job in Belgrade after his
wife died. A seemingly routine assignment escalates into a
hellish fight for survival.
The route
leads the transport through Pancevo, where they encounter
an ecological disaster and infected people who are trying
to kill them. Detective Vukovic and the Interpol agents soon
realize that their only chance for escape from the infected
hordes lies in allying with the dangerous, mysterious prisoner.
The escape from Pancevo becomes their common goal. While the
evil runs through the streets, they must survive in hope that
they will be able to avoid the impending apocalypse.”
Not content
with just one Zombie horror, two sequels; "Wrath of the
Dead" and "Reign of the Dead" are already in
pre production. As well as news on the release, we have also
found a great looking teaser trailer for the flick. There
is also a ton of good looking stills, artwork and posters
to been seen on the studios website. “Zone
of the Dead”
opens in Serbia in June.
