Dog
Soldiers 2 - Fresh Meat
Well
'Dog Soldiers 2' has been a LONG time coming, but news has
arrived via ‘Horrormovies.ca’ that we may not
have to wait too much longer. They have picked up on an interview
with Director Rob Green in the new issue of ‘Rue
morgue’. In it Green makes mention of his upcoming
project of ‘Dog Soldiers: Fresh Meat’, the long
delayed sequel to Marshall’s excellent werewolf picture
‘Dog Soldiers’. The story (which Green has written
with Eric Miller) takes place shortly after the first. Private
Cooper following his battle with the werewolves in the farmhouse
- sets off across the Scottish highlands, looking for civilization
with the sheepdog Sam. He is picked up by the American Special
Forces unit from the previous days' wargames. His story is
not believed, and he is detained on suspicion of being a mass
murderer. Meanwhile, a survivor from Cpt. Ryan's unit is found,
who says that some of the other survivors have become werewolves.
Night falls the werewolves turn, and come looking for fresh
meat. Green says: "Some of the characters actually
love being a werewolf because they are so powerful –
the ultimate killing machine…it’s a fun spin on
the traditional angle that being a werewolf is a curse which
damns the person no matter what. We also have a very savage
she-wolf in the climax who faces against the leader of the
pack of Dog Soldiers." ‘Fresh Meat’
has been in a holding circle forever and the film still wont
start shooting until Autumn. Green explains why: "We
need longer nights for shooting because about 70 percent of
the film is set at night. We want to shoot during a Hunter’s
Moon when the moon appears three times its normal size."
So we have a Director, a plot, and a schedule. All going well
(this time) ‘Fresh Meat' will be served up in 2007.

‘Fido’
– A mans best friend is his.....Zombie?
I
stumbled across this today and had to include it if not for
the premise alone. Set in an alternative 1950s the world has
been overrun by Zombies, until a scientist invents a collar
to control them. Soon they are ‘domesticated’
and used as servants. Here’s the full Synopsis: Welcome
to Willard, a small town lost in the idyllic world of the
50's, where the sun shines every day, everybody knows their
neighbor, and rotting zombies carry the mail. Years ago, the
earth passed through a cloud of space dust, causing the dead
to rise with an insatiable hunger for human flesh. Terror
spread across the land, until a collar was invented that made
the zombies docile, even useful. A company was born: ZomCon.
Thanks to their patented domestication collar, zombies became
gardeners, milkmen, servants, even pets. ZomCon would like
everyone to believe that they have the world under control
- but do they? Timmy Robinson doesn't think so. He thinks
the world is "phony-baloney". An awkward loner,
Timmy spends so much time in his room even his own parents
don't notice him. So when Mom buys a zombie to help around
the house, Timmy is surprised, and even curious, when the
beast wants to play catch. When the zombie saves him from
the local bullies, a true friendship is born, and Timmy names
the zombie, "Fido". But Fido's collar goes on the
fritz, and the neighbors start paying the ultimate price.
To complicate matters, ZomCon's notorious zombie-control specialist,
Mr. Bottoms, has moved in across the street. What begins as
a small town story about a boy and his best friend, becomes
a biting satire about our world, the price of fear, and the
rewards of risking love. "Fido" will rip your heart
out. The film is current in post production and is slated
for release in the autumn.

Terry
Gilliam Talks "Good Omens"
Terry
Gilliam is trying to get his next project "Good Omens"
off the ground, based on a Terry Pratchett novel. Gilliam
told UK news service Teletext: "I have struggled to find
big projects that inspire me, but this book has. It's very
funny, about the anti-Christ and devils and angels, it's very
funny and inspiring. I have tried to find a small project
like Tideland
that I could do but I haven't found one." Anyone familiar
with the book and its story will know this would be a perfect
project for Gilliam’s directing style and sense of humor.
I loved the book and It would be great to see what he could
do with it on film.

House

Sony
Pictures Classics has snagged the rights – for America,
at least, which bodes well for the rest of us - to Zhang (pic

Of The Golden Flower'. Yimou is filming right now on the tale
that stars Chow-Yun-Fat and Gong Li play star-crossed lovers
who fall in love within the borders of a kingdom. She plays
Phoenix, an imperial bodyguard, while he plays Prince Ping.
Numerous forces, including Ping's stepmother, who is also
in love with him, try to keep the lovers apart. It leads them
on a dangerous journey where secrets of the royal family are
uncovered. There’s no release date set for the film
yet, and no word on when/if it’ll make it across to
the UK. But given 'Daggers’ success, we doubt there’ll
be much of a delay.

'Bug'
- New trailers online
Three
new trailers for the upcoming film ‘Bug’ directed
by the mastermind behind 'The Exorcist' William Friedkin,
have turned up on a French website. 'Bug' is psychological
thriller starring Ashley Judd, Michael Shannon, Harry Connick
Jr, and written by Tracy Letts. The film based on Letts' play
is about modern paranoia in the wake of the Gulf War, and
contains elements of black comedy, romance, and horror. Most
of the action takes place in a seedy Oklahoma motel room,
where Gulf War veteran Peter (Michael Shannon) and lonely
divorcee Agnes (Ashley Judd) hole up together and fall in
love while contending with an apparent infestation of microscopic
bugs. Agnes' violent ex-husband Jerry, is played by Harry
Connick Jr.. Other characters include her lesbian friend and
co-worker, played by Lynn Collins; and Peter's doctor, played
by Brian F. O'Byrne. The story addresses issues of domestic
violence, conspiracy theories and schizophrenia. These trails
are taken mainly from the dramatic parts of the movie. We'll
probably have to wait to see the truly freaky stuff.

Gerard
Butler plays 'Priest'
We
first covered news of the film version of 'priest' back on
May
30th, now it appears Scottish-born actor Gerard
Butler is in negotiations to star in a new film as a warrior
priest who hunts down vampires. Filmmaker Andrew Douglas,
who cut his teeth on last year's remake of "The Amityville
Horror, has signed on to direct the Screen Gems project titled
"Priest," a post-apocalyptic horror western based
on a comic book by Min-Woo Hyung. Sony Pictures will distribute
the film, which is scheduled to start production October 1
in Mexico. The story centres on a warrior priest (Butler)
who disobeys church law by teaming with a young sheriff and
a priestess to track down a band of renegade vampires who
have kidnapped the priest's niece. Newcomer Steven Strait,
who recently wrapped Screen Gems' horror thriller "The
Covenant" and is filming Roland Emmerich's "10,000
B.C.," is in talks to co-star as the sheriff. Development
of the film has raised eyebrows as Sony now has two similar
high-profile projects under its corporate umbrella. Columbia
Pictures recently gave the OK for production to begin on the
comic book-based vampire movie "30 Days of Night,"
starring Josh Hartnett, with shooting set to begin in early
August in New Zealand. Butler, who played the title role in
"The Phantom of the Opera" and starred as the mediaeval
warrior in 2005's "Beowulf & Grendel," next
stars in Warner Bros. Pictures' "300" and recently
wrapped "Butterfly on a Wheel."[source]

'A
Dirty Carnival' beats 'X-Men 3'
'A
Dirty Carnival' Koreas newest gangster flick directed by Yoo
Ha drew the most viewers at the box office in Korea this week,
with some 80,000 viewers at 390 theaters nationwide, leaving
U.S. blockbuster “X-Men: The Last Stand” behind,
which tallied some 75,000 viewers at 428 theaters. 'A Dirty
Carnival' has become the first Korean movie in seven weeks
to beat Hollywood blockbusters that had topped the box office
there since “Mission: Impossible 3” was released
on May 3. The top spot has since been occupied by “The
Da Vinci Code,” “Poseidon,” and “X-Men”
before “A Dirty Carnival” took the top spot on
Tuesday.

'Watchmen'
finally gets a Director
Well
they do say a week is a long time in showbiz. As it was only
just over a week (12th June) ago we covered an interview with
the president of DC comics, who was making very non committal
noises about a Film version of this classic graphic novel.
Now it seems Zach Snyder has come aboard to develop and direct
"Watchmen," for Warner Bro's Pictures. Alex Tse
is writing the script of the long-gestating project, which
is being produced by Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin. "Watchmen"
has a development history almost as epic as the story the
comic tells. The project has seen such studios as Fox, Universal
and Paramount come and go and has seduced and vexed such filmmakers
as Terry Gilliam, Darren Aronofsky, Paul Greengrass and screenwriter
David Hayter. Sources say Snyder has impressed Warner's with
"300," an adaptation of a Frank Miller graphic novel
that he directed and co-wrote. Snyder shot the movie -- a
Greek epic about the battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C. --
on sound stages in Montreal using partial sets and greenscreens,
similar in technique to Robert Rodriguez's "Sin City."
So we finally have a runner. Lets hope it gets over the next
few hurdles.

'Gangster'
- Hardcore action from Malaysia
This
film Recently had its western premiere as part of the New
York Asian film festival. A blood bath of a film from Malaysia,
GANGSTER is reminiscent of 1980’s Hong Kong criminal
cool, carved up and served hot. It was the number one movie
in Malaysia last year by far. Malaysians flocked to a movie
about illegal street racing, gutter-crawling losers ripping
off their dealer and fleeing the country, nightclub assassinations
and prostitutes with lethal pimps. Telling three overlapping
stories about three desperate losers who've hit bottom and
are running out of air, GANGSTER follows a hooker who plans
to rip off her boyfriend, a food stall owner who's borrowed
too much money and doesn't know how to pay it back, and an
illegal car racer as obsessive as Captain Ahab, who's willing
to turn pedestrians into a smear on the pavement, if that
means he can beat the top ranked driver. With all three of
the lead roles played by Malaysia's no1 actor Rosyam Nor (all
three people in the poster left are him) this movie takes
every convention from film noir movies, and dumps them out
on the streets of Kuala Lumpor. Fun!

'Krrish'
- Bollywood's First Superhero
His
long black coat ripples in the wind. He surveys the city from
high atop a skyscraper. He's a man with a mission. He's Krrish:
Hollywood's first caped crusader. With Superman Returns poised
to conquer the world's multiplexes, the Indian film industry
has hit back with its own masked avenger. 'Krrish' is the
sequel to another Bollywood flick called 'Koi ... Mil Gaya'.
Our hero inherited his superpowers from the hero of the first
film. Director Rakesh Roshan is a man with a mission too:
"As there is Batman, Spider-Man, and Superman, in the
same way I have created a superhero character. I want to prove
to the world that Bollywood is no less than Hollywood".
To perfect the visual effects, Rakesh imported two experts
from Hollywood, Marc Kolbe and Craig A. Mumma, who worked
on "Godzilla" and "Independence Day".
As for the action sequences he didn't skimp there either,
hiring the Hong Kong-based action choreographer Tony Ching,
acclaimed for his work on "House of Flying Daggers"
and "Hero." All of which has pushed the budget up
to more than 450 million rupees (approximately $10 million).
That figure is considered huge in Bollywood, but is small
by Hollywood standards. The Warner Brothers movie "Superman
Returns," cost more than $200 million. 'Krrish' premieres
in India this Friday. 'Krrish'

Population
436
Although
this movie has the perhaps dubious pleasure of Fred Durst
(of Limp Bizkit) starring in it, I don't think this looks
half bad. Synopsis: Rockwell Falls is an idyllic town
whose population of 436 has remained unchanged for 100 years.
Sent to find the reason for such consistency, a census-taker,
Steve Kady (Jeremy Sisto) finds that something sinister may
be at hand. He becomes trapped in the prison-like town full
of 'golden rules' that don't allow its population to drop
below or exceed exactly 436 citizens, a number in accordance
with 'God's Law'. He eventually learns that no one is ever
allowed to leave Rockwell Falls and that the town citizens
will do whatever it takes to maintain the status quo.
Check out the teaser, especially the eerie bit at the end
with the clock. Note the time!. The film premiered at Austin's
South by Southwest film festival in March. Oddly it still
has had no official release date for the USA, but in Europe
we will be able to see the film on dvd, released in July.

Pitt
outbids DiCaprio for Zombie film rights
Hollywood
A-listers Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio found themselves
at loggerheads in their battle to obtain the film rights to
a zombie horror book that will be published in the autumn.
But in the end there could be just one winner. Following a
lengthy bidding war, it was confirmed last night that Pitt's
production company had come out on top. World War Z, an as-yet-unpublished
novel by Max Brooks, had attracted the interest of both Pitt's
company, Plan B, which is backed by Paramount Pictures, and
DiCaprio's Appian Way production arm, based at rival studio
Warner Brothers. The tale is set 10 years after an epidemic
has turned the bulk of the planet into flesh-eating zombies.
Brooks, a former writer at Saturday Night Live, had a cult
hit with his 2003 novel, The Zombie Survival Guide. Details
of the deal remain sketchy, but reports claim that Plan B
have paid a high six-figure for the rights. This will rise
to seven figures if and when the picture actually goes before
the cameras.

Tim
Burton to do 'Sweeney Todd'
Paramount
Pictures chairman Brad Grey has exchanged one big-budget Tim
Burton project for another: He has sent "Believe It or
Not" back into development while Stacey Snider, CEO and
co-chairman of Paramount's DreamWorks, is putting "Sweeney
Todd" on the fast track with Burton at the helm. DreamWorks
will now need to assemble and cast that movie, which is a
project adapted by John Logan ("The Aviator") from
the Stephen Sondheim Broadway musical. Burton already is talking
with Johnny Depp for the lead role as the Demon Barber of
Fleet Street, Paramount sources said. Burton and producers
Richard Zanuck, Sean Daniel and Jim Jacks had been fighting
the battle of the budget bulge on "Believe," starring
Jim Carrey. But Grey refused to give the project a green light
until the ambitious production, based on the adventurer Ripley,
fell into the $150 million range, co-president of production
Brad Weston confirmed.[source] Hollywood Reporter.

DC
President talks 'Watchmen'
DC
Comics President Paul Levitz has been interviewed re what’s
coming up on the DC movie front. One interesting snippet he
did give away was about a film version of ‘Watchmen’
which was enough to generate a small amount of extra hope
that this project might actually get off the ground. One day
soon hopefully! "Warner's is looking at Watchmen
right now. I believe they are looking for a director at the
moment. I negotiated the Watchmen film deal when the third
issue of the maxi-series was coming out in 1985 or 1986. It's
been through Fox, Universal, Paramount so far and now it's
at Warner's. God knows. I think it's an extraordinary difficult
property to do right as a film. It is a creative property
that is very specifically designed for the medium in which
it is published. I think it's a real challenge to break out
and do it. I think they had a very interesting script and
certainly Paul Greengrass is a great director, so I had some
hope for the Paramount one. I hope Warner will be able to
put something great around it." So to translate
from corporate speak, I think we can say its on the cards
but most definitely don’t hold your breathe yet.

LEE
Myung-se to Direct Horror Melodrama
Director
LEE Myung-se's next project is a horror melodrama titled 'M'.
The production was part of the Film Market at the Cannes Film
Festival. The story is about a man struggling to remember
something important, a woman who is unrecognized by the man
she's in love with, and death. LEE Myung-se is the director
of last year's Duelist. The film polarized its viewers from
people who thought the film was utterly awfull to those who
judged it as a brilliant film. The film starring GANG Dong-won,
HA Ji-won and AHN Seong-gi was recently released in French
cinemas and was earlier released in Japan. Director LEE focuses
on choreographing movement and visual esthetics. His stories
don't follow the general rules of story-telling. Another factor
that deviates from the norm is the acting in LEE's films.
Therefore, his films often praised by critics - have not reached
wide audiences. LEE's 1999 film Nowhere to Hide gained him
international recognition. The film was a fusion of genres.
The style, visuals and movement impressed the brothers Ridley
and Tony Scott and they invited him to America to collaborate.
LEE returned to Korea to make Duelist.

'Evil
Seek' - New project from Wayne Kramer
The writer-director of THE COOLER and RUNNING
SCARED Wayne
Kramer has recently revealed to ‘Now playing Magazine’
details of his new movie 'Evil Seek' and the premise does
sound dare we say it.... quite original! From Kramer : "It’s
basically every 1000 years in hell, they elect a new Satan,
so the reigning Satan has to come down to Earth, take over
the body of a mortal and find his successor, the most evil
person alive. And he wakes up in the body of an FBI profiler
working a terrible serial killing case in LA. And sort of
like Satan is the one moral guy in this film. And he has inherited
a disgruntled ex-wife, a 15-year-old daughter who’s
becoming all promiscuous, a lesbian partner. And he’s
got no powers, just a nose for evil. And it turns out that
when he starts investigating these bizarre killings, it looks
like the killer’s trying to summon the devil."
Along with this very interesting storyline we are also promised
the supernatural thriller will be "humorous (in a
pitch black kind of way) yet, also very disturbing and freakish.
It’s definitely one that’s gonna challenge the
MPAA, I’ll tell you that." A definite one
to keep an eye on here methinks.

'Hellboy
2' picked up by Paramount
Fear
not Hellboy fans, it seems that he of the Red horns will ride
again. News has arrived that Paramount will be picking up
the rights to the sequel 'Hellboy 2 -The Golden Army' .Del
Toro has been quoted as saying "We're moving studios
right now," says Del Toro. "They don't have a deal
with Sony any more and we are looking for financing for HELLBOY
2. It's at Paramount right now. It's bigger in scale, but
not necessarily in budget. Abe Sapien has a much bigger part,
and we're keeping closer to the mythology of the comics."
Del Toro giggled with glee as he revealed a singer whose music
would be part of the film. "There is a song by Barry
Manilow, and you'll have to find out about how that fits in.
I know you are all saying 'what the f**k is that?!' Hmmmm
ok. Manilow aside, fingers crossed the project gets off the
ground soon.

'The
Wicker man' - Trailer online
Ok.
Arguments as to whether they should have even attempted a
remake of such a seminal classic as the Wicker Man to one
side, I've watched the trailer and I have to admit it doesn't
look too bad. Saying that I still think Nicolas
Cage wasn't the right choice for the leading role and his
performance from this first trail at least, doesn't look Oscar
material. But hey too late now. See it for yourself and decide.

Horror
Going Dutch
It
almost seems as though the Dutch are having themselves a mini
horror film renaissance at them moment with films due out
left and right. First up 'Dood Eind' (left) Synopsis :Seven
friends travel to Scotland to hike in the mountains.. One
of the friends is badly hurt, so they flee to an old abandoned
house deep within the woods. They soon discover that the house
is cursed - and once you've entered it you can't get out.
A room transforms into another room, doors become lethal weapons,
and one by one the friends are killed. Standard haunted
house fare you could argue, but the trailer seems to promise
more than usual.

Eind' trailer (Flash)
'SL8N8
aka Slachtnacht' - Slaughter Night
Second
up from the Netherlands is 'SL8N8 aka Slachtnacht' with a
familiar story of miscreants toying with Ouija boards. Having
brought along an Ouija board just for kicks to deserted mine,
they contact the spirit world and unwittingly unleash the
spirit of Martiens a serial killer looking for revenge .Their
visit becomes a grueling nightmare as, one by one, they fall
prey to a hidden and merciless evil power that takes possession
of their bodies. In a nerve wrecking race against time they
have to put Martiens’ spirit to rest and get out of
the mine alive… Again as with 'Dood Eind' this isn't
anything we haven't seen before, in fact it has definite overtones
of director Marcus Adams Ouija board film 'Long
time dead' but the movie seems to have been put together
with a tad more style and flare than most that Hollywood has
come up with recently. Source:[Joblo]

'Moscow
Zero' - Website updated
The
website for Luna (aka Maria Lidon's) Russian set horror piece
has been updated with a couple of new trailers. Val Kilmer
joins Oksana Akinshina who replaced Alicia Silverstone and
Vincent Gallo. In "Moscow Zero," Kilmer plays the
head of a group of Muscovites who live in the city's underground.
Akinshina plays Lyuba, another underground dweller; Gallo's
character leads a rescue team in search of a Russian anthropologist
who's disappeared beneath the underground system. They discover
an eerie multilevel system of caves and catacombs. The $10
million psychological horror began shooting last December
in Moscow, Spain and the UK. For those that don't like too
many spoilers I'd suggest only watching trailer 2.

Summer season of Horror
'Arang'
Koreans it seems have long relied on horror flicks to cool
the summer heat. And as the summer season lurks just around
the corner, serial killers, freaks and ghosts are out in full
force to chill moviegoers. The following are some of Korean
horror films slated for this summer. First up is 'Arang' (pic
left) which opens the summer season. As it is based on a Korean
folk tale in which a ghost visits a district governor to ask
him help her pay off her grudge, the film aims to put Korean
touches to maximize fear for local audiences. Directed by
Ahn Sang-hoon and starring Song Yun-a and Lee Dong-wook, the
film revolves around two detectives who encounter mysterious
accidents while tackling a murder case.
