David
Slade to direct - '30 Days of Night'
ComingSoon.net
has got the scoop that British director David Slade has been
hired by Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures to produce a film
version of the Steve Niles - Ben Templesmith horror comic
30 Days Of Night. To give you an idea of what may be in store
here is a snippet from the comics synopsis. "Have
you ever imagined living in total darkness? They have. The
feeding fenzy begins. In
a sleepy, secluded Alaska town called Barrow, the sun sets
and doesn't rise for over thirty consecutive days and nights.
From the darkness, across the frozen wasteland, an evil will
come that will bring the residents of Barrow to their kness.
The only hope for the town is the Sheriff and Deputy, a husband
and wife who are torn between their own survival and saving
the town they love"
Cool! If the film reflects the dark overtones of the
comic we may be in for a treat here. Full

Monarch
of The Moon
Rocket pack wearing heroes, with scantily clad leading ladies
on their arm. Japanese super villains in heavy makeup, looking
like a psychotic transsexual Geisha on an off night. Camp
nonsense of the highest order? Bring it on! 'Monarch of the
moon' is produced by 'Dark Horse entertainment' and it appears
they have been making a very much tongue in cheek claim this
is an old movie from the 40s they have restored. Patently
untrue when you see the pics, but a very amusing marketing
ploy none the less. More a homage to the sci-fi show reels
of the 40s and 50s. Check out exclusive pics over at 'The

Century Fox confirm Wolverine prequel
Well
with the massive success they have enjoyed so far, it was
'almost' a dead cert that fox would try to milk this franchise
for as long as possible. But considering the quality of the
first two X-Men movies, if they maintain what so far has been
one of the most credible film from a comic series we have
seen, more power to them I say. Fox have confirmed there will
indeed be a spin off film, this time covering the early years
of Wolverine, pre X-Men. Cool! Catch the full article over
at 'The movie reporter'. Which includes an interview with
the head of Fox films.

The
Banquet (Ye-Yan)
Some new
info has sprung up regarding this year’s mega budget
period piece 'The Banquet'. There is a full story scenopsis
available on Media
Asia. Reading some other Asian movie websites it looks
like the production value is going to be staggeringly high.
No guarantee of success we may argue. Last years big budget
hopeful 'The Promise' only did marginally well in Hong Kong,
due to bad reviews citing a poor storyline. But with 'Ziyi
Zhang' heading up the cast here’s hoping! There is no
official website as yet, but you can catch a behind the scenes
trailer on 'Ziyi Zhangs' website. Trailer

'Eli
Roth' to direct film version of stephen king book "Cell"
Picked
up this snippet over at 'The
Movie Hole'. It seems new boy on the horror block 'Roth'
has agreed to front the project. Personally I haven't read
a King book for quite some time. For me he went well off the
boil with his horror writing a fair few years back. Anyhow,
the synopsis centers around most of civilization being destroyed
by a virus carried through mobile phones. This virus turns
those that don’t die instantly, into insane psychopaths.
Hmm 28 days later anyone? In any case, that dodgy premise
not withstanding, if Mr. Roth can work his kick em in the
pants and keep on shocking them, magic into the movie, it
may just be worth a look.

Classic
80's horror pic "From Beyond" to get DVD release!
Well
who would have thought it? Not a mere two weeks ago, a few
of us were discussing films we had seen years ago, and wished
we could see again on DVD. One of those was the aforementioned
"From Beyond". An 80s classic from the director
'Stuart Gordon' also responsible other greats as "The
reanimator" and "Dolls". So we were knocked
back with surprise to read the film is going to be released
on DVD, fully restored with a brand new transfer. Also it
transpires there were multiple scenes cut in the original
release. Those outtakes removed from the original VHS version
are to be replaced, and its to have a
Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack! Check out the full specs of
the re release, over at Fangoria.

'Old
Boy' director Chan Wook-Park goes Vamp.
The
master filmmaker Chan Wook-Park, creator of the much vaunted
(and rightly so!) Korean vengeance trilogy has announced in
an interview with variety magazine his intention to direct
a vampire Flick with a modern twist. Titled "Bakjwi"
meaning "the bat" and in English it is the slightly
ambiguous "Evil Live" the film is due to go into
pre production early in 2007. Variety

Killer
Hair strikes again!
Well if nothing else this raised quite a laugh.
It seems Japan isn’t quite over its love affair of Horror
with a follicle twist. Variety (my they have been busy on
the Asian Cinema news front recently) have reported on a film
called "Exte”, a horror pic about killer hair extension
of all things. On the big plus side it does feature one of
my favorite Japanese actresses, Chiaki Kuriyama', made famous
worldwide in Kill Bill vol 1 as the number one fun time Psycho
schoolgirl Go-go.I know I shouldnt want to see it. But I do!

Blood
Rain - Korean period thriller, that doesnt pull its punches.
Most definitely not to be confused with the
upcoming Vampire flick of a similar name. Blood Rain tells
the story of a murder investigation on a small island in Korea
in the 19th century. It's on this isolated and largely self-autonomous
island that a string of gruesome murders start to take place.
It's not just the growing number of dead bodies, but the sickly
innovative cruelty of the killing that breeds apprehension
in Won-gyu (Cha Seung-won), a government investigator sent
from the mainland to solve the case. Soon he discovers that
the murders are linked to an incident seven years in the past.
I haven’t been able to find a trailer with English subs,
as yet, but if the one I have found is anything to go by,
the films not lacking in atmosphere.

You
can’t keep a 'good' franchise down.Lions Gate announce
Saw 3!
Oh dear God no! The first was interesting,
if only marginally. The second was bordering on mundane, except
for the slightly surprising twist at the finale. Now Lions
Gate have decided we must endure a third installment. Reopen
the discussion about American horror reaching the end of its
lifetime, and badly need an injection of new ideas anyone?

Initial
D – Drift Racer gets UK cinema release.
Hong Kong Legends have just announced a limited
cinema release in the spring here in the UK. Initial D –
Drift Racer, is the long-awaited live action film of the international
Manga.
Directed by Infernal Affairs duo Andy Lau and Alan Mak, the
film features "some of the best drift driving sequences
ever committed film, and overtakes the likes of The Fast and
Furious with its lack of CGI and blue screen technology".
We have yet to see, it but apparently it received rather mixed
reviews in Hong Kong, so we'll reserve judgment until its
big screen debut. Hong

Japan

"RIDICULOUS sideburns, preposterous sets,
a fighting stick that can shrink to fit inside the human ear
and a faithful sidekick called Pigsy. For the whole of Japan,
and a generation of British fans, it can mean only one thing:
Monkey is back.Fuji Television’s bold and expensive
project to remake the most successful Japanese television
drama of all time has broken records: the new version of Monkey
is the first to glue one in three Japanese viewers to each

Ergo
Proxy goes Radiohead
It seems the guys over at the Anime news network
were one of the first to pick up on this. The existing track
'Paranoid Android' from the Radiohead album 'Ok Computer'
has been picked by the series producers as the opening title
track. Apparently the boys would not sign off use of the track
until after they had seen a preview screening. Ergo proxy
started airing on Japanese TV last week. Heres hoping it heads
this way soon.

An
American Haunting UK cinema release date draws near!!...
First caught sight of this several months
ago and the trailer greatly piqued our interest. It has been
out in the states since late last year, but we are due for
a release here in the UK in April. Based on a 'supposed' (hmm
yes ok) true story Set in 19th Century Tennesse, it tells
of the events surrounding the 'Bell'
family and there gradual decent into horror from the sustained
attacks of unseen entity. The attacks were well documented,
and are supposedly the first ever written accounts of a spirit
or supernatural creature actually causing the death of a person.
That and a performance by one of our fave actors 'Donald Sutherland'
puts this squarely on the to see list. Official

Sunabuza/Sunabo
(Desert Punk)
I
discovered this whilst on one of my wanders around the world
of Anime. A lot of the content is in Japanese, so getting
to grips in depth with the plot will take some doing. There
is an English language site as well. Looks like its going
to be dubbed for the American market. Heres what I could decipher
of the plot.......... "In the future, Japan is a wasteland.
In the Great Kantou Desert, scattered humans eke out a living
in the hot sand. Among them, is a short- statured man they
call "Sunabouzu" makes a living as a bounty hunter.
Like a demon of the sand, he seems unbeatable" Dont let
the websites fool you. From the looks of the trailer this
is quite adult Anime. There are two sites, the first has a
fair amount of the English content.
Check them out!
