Chinese website for John Woo's 'Red Cliff' goes live

The official Chinese site for John Woo's mega budget historical action movie 'The Battle Of Red Cliff,' has just gone online. There isnt much content as yet, but there are menu buttons by the shed load that are due to go live soon. Definitely one to keep an eye on for updates. We sure will be! 'Battle of Red Cliff' opens in Hong Kong in July.

The plot: In 208 A.D., in the final days of the Han Dynasty, shrewd Prime Minster Cao convinced the fickle Emperor Han the only way to unite all of China was to declare war on the kingdoms of Xu in the west and East Wu in the south. Thus began a military campaign of unprecedented scale, led by the Prime Minister, himself. Left with no other hope for survival, the kingdoms of Xu and East Wu formed an unlikely alliance. Numerous battles of strength and wit ensued, both on land and on water, eventually culminating in the battle of Red Cliff. During the battle, two thousand ships were burned, and the course of Chinese history was changed forever.

Upcoming Indonesian horror 'Karma'

A teaser poster has just been released for the upcoming movie 'Karma,' and we have to admit to being intrigued by the film, as so far its looking very untypical for a standard Indonesian horror production. For one thing it has none of the usual Teens (wallowing in huge amounts of melodrama) in love, being killed off by a long haired Demon. Instead we get this sophisticated poster and an intriguing plot:

"The Guan family is put under an eternal spell: every woman in the family is bound to suffer a tragic death. Still, this does not deter Sandra (Dominique Agisca Diyose) to marry Armand Guan (Joe Taslim), and pull out every possible effort to put the long-lasting bad karma to an end."

Another surprise is that the pic will boast visuals by Hollywood art director Martin Surya (The Hulk, Paycheck). With a blend of ancient Chinese/Indonesian traditions and Hollywood visuals, we could be in for quite a treat. Still in post production, 'Karma' opens in Indonesia, in July.

Umberto Lenzi's 'Nightmare City' on R1 DVD

Umberto Lenzi's 1980 take on the zombie sub-genre, (originally titled 'Incubo sulla città contaminata') 'Nightmare City' is getting an R1 DVD release through Blue Underground. Fast zombies were nothing new to Italian horror movie fans in the 80s. They're not only fast, these bad boys use knifes and guns.

Hugo Stiglitz, Mel Ferrer (Eaten Alive) and Francisco Rabal star in this wild splatterfest. Originally released in U.S as the heavily-edited City Of The Walking Dead, this new version of Nightmare City has apparently been transferred from original vault materials and is now presented completely uncut.

When a radioactive spill causes mass contamination, 1000s of infected citizens are transformed into bloodthirsty undead fiends. But these are not your standard stumbling gut-munchers; this is an all-out attack by fast-moving, flesh-ripping, ass-kicking maniacs that can only be stopped by a bullet to the brain. Get ready for an orgy of gunfire, gore and gratuitous aerobics where zombies run, chaos reigns and heads explode.

'Dusk Watch' bites the dust?!

Well this news bites. Timur Bekmambetov, director of the superbly original Russian Day/Night Watch fantasy horror series has pretty much killed off any chance of there being 3rd and final film. During a Q&A session at the New York Comic Con this weekend to discuss ‘Wanted,’ his latest Hollywood film, Bekmambetov was quizzed on how the final film (to have been called Dusk Watch) was progressing. To which he commented: "Wanted is my Dusk Watch for now, because it's really the same, a different story, but the same genre. I don't know when Dusk Watch will happen. Let's say this is Dusk Watch."

The same genre!? Like hell it is. So that, it appears is that. If it's true that Dusk Watch will never happen, millions of fans may never forgive (us included) him.

First teaser trailer for '20th Century Boys'

Following on from the slightly creepy TV-spot that appeared online a couple of months ago, a first teaser trailer has arrived on the official site for the live action version of '20th Century Boys.' Directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi (Sword of Alexander) the film is based on the best selling Manga by Naoki Urasawa.

Here's the plotline taken from Wikipedia: "Growing older is rough and Kenji is finding out just how hard it can be as life starts wearing down on him. On top of trying to make ends meet running a convenience store he has to care for the niece that his missing sister left in his care. Memories of youth make it easier, until those memories come back to haunt him. Kenji and his old friends are slowly being drawn into a mysterious conspiracy that could threaten the world. Someone they know from the past is turning their childhood ideas of bio weapons, mass destruction, and a giant killer robots into reality. Who is the mysterious "Friend" and how does he tie into Kenji's youth? Why are there disappearances and deaths tied into Ochanomizu University? Their memories hold the keys to the puzzle, but time and age have clouded their minds. The strange occurrences and the reach of the "Friend" conspiracy grow by the day. It will all culminate on New Year's Eve 2000. Will Kenji and the others be able to put together the puzzle and save the world?"

The teaser doesn't give much away, but watch out for the last 5 seconds when we get one hell of a eye opening (if brief) money shot. So expansive is the plot of '20th Century Boys,' the story will apparently have to be split between two films, the first of which opens in Japan in August.

International trailer for Indie British Zombie horror 'The Vanguard'

A new International trail is out for Matthew Hope's chilling post-apocalyptic survivors tale The Vanguard. Written and directed by Hope the film stars Ray Bullock Junior, Shiv Grewal & Jack Bailey.

The plot: "The world is in chaos - the last known oil fields are depleted, over-population has reached critical levels & mankind is about to become a thing of the past. From this apocalyptic nightmare, an entity known as the Corporation devised a course of action to cull the human race and start a mass depopulation program. But the drug they created to kill instead reduces humans to a primitive ape-like state, now known as Biosyns.

Their sight reduced to virtual blindness, the Biosyns rely on scent and sound to survive, running wild in the unpopulated countryside. But for Max -- a young man cast adrift into the wilderness to live as a hunter/gatherer-- the Biosyns are the enemy, and must be fought to preserve his very existence. Max has forged a life without human contact, and every day is a battle to stay alive. Soon the Biosyns begin to evolve - learning first to communicate, then banding together, their vision returning -- and now they're coming for Max."

On the whole the pic has very slick looks that belie its modest budget. Vanguard might very well be a must see for Zombie gore fans. Recently screened at several festivals and the European film market, Vanguard has enjoyed favorable reviews and word is that they have just secured a distribution deal for the film.

Joining them are Danny Lee, actress Tien Niu and genre regulars Lam Suet, Maggie Siu, Eddie Cheung, and Pinky Cheung also along for the ride. Fatal Move is an underworld saga rich with themes of brotherhood and betrayal, but director Law makes sure to give the audience what they really want. No trailer for the film as yet, but we have turned up a few stills to be going on with. Also interesting, is how each country is portraying the movie with their posters. From the more in your face Thai version (pic left), to the very different and understated Taiwanese one sheet. 'The Fatality' opens in both countries, in June.

MONGOL invades the U.S. in June

After beating around the proverbial bush for what seems an eternity, U.S. distributor Picturehouse have finally decided on a release (limited of course) date of June 6th for Sergei Bodrov's Russian historical epic on the life of Ghengis Khan, 'Mongol.'

With an impressive budget (for a Russian production) of $10 -$12 million the movie stars Asian-American actor Channing Tatum ("Coach Carter") as the young Genghis, while Tadanobu Asano ("Zatoichi") plays his brother. The film is the first part of a possible trilogy about the conqueror. Part one follows Khan through his early years, while the second will show the period of his conquests and the trilogy will close with a film about his old age.

The films looks absolutely stunning and is definitely one to be watched on the big screen. To catch a trailer in lovely crisp (though you will have to listen to "Mr Voiceover") Quicktime, head over to the official U.S site.

Teaser poster for Paul Catling's 'TOMO'

A teaser poster is out for Paul Catling’s feature length version of his award winning short Sci-fi film ‘TOMO.’ The original won both the Short Film Award at Sundance Film Festival and the Grand Jury Prize at the Boston Independent Film Fest in 2004.

Set in the near future, a man is stranded on a barren ice-planet when his cargo ship crash-lands. John's only hope of rescue is through the help of an emergency survival robot or Tomo ("companion" in Japanese). At first John is cautious, but as they battle to survive, he drops his guard, finding friendship and humanity where he least expects it. Adapted from the award winning short, Tomo explores the relationship between humans and their machines, refusing to shy away from what could be a terrifying reality or the great new hope.

The new film (still in production) mixes live action with CGI and the CG character ‘TOMO,’ will apparently directly interact with the human character. If the story is as good as the effects, this could be brilliant. For a taster of what treat may be to come, you can take a look at a clip from the original short film here.
