- A CHINESE GHOST STORY heading for a remake
- Posted by Deljhp - 24/03/09 at 02:01 PM
Just in case you don’t catch on later, I loved the original movie, so have to admit to being more than a little torn about this news. A true classic of 80s Hong Kong cinema, Siu-Tung Ching’s A Chinese Ghost Story is apparently being set up for a big budget remake. With its flying swordsman, superbly choreographed martial arts, Ghosts, Zombies, evil Witches and all other manner of the supernatural goings on, Ghost Story has been responsible for introducing tens of thousands to the joys of Hong Kong cinema. Indeed (along with “Zu Warriors”) it was one of the first Asian movies I ever watched, and afterwards, pretty much sealed my life long addiction there and then.
There’s no word yet as to who’s tipped to star or direct (we can dream Ching would return to do it again) the project, but there are already some heavy hitting names attached on the production front. Tan Cheung (Iron Monkey, An Empress and the Warrior) will pen the script and the film will be produced by by Ketsarinh Lan (Flying Dragon, Leaping Tiger, Painted Skin). Still in pre-production visuals are of course lacking though we have been able to find is this piece of concept art/teaser poster. Its hefty $10 million plus budget is enough to deliver some superb FX, so with the right cast and director we could be in for a real treat. Heres hoping.

Seen “Enchanting Shadow” and I’d say it was more an
“inspiration” for Ghost Story than a direct remake. The
plot in Shadow is a hell of a lot slower. Beautiful to
look at but not much action!

Not a complaint, more (as always) a hope that what they do
will actually improve on the last one.

Well… As A CHINESE GHOST STORY was itself a remake. And a remake really near to the original movie I’m not sure complaining is the right thing to do ! :D
Both movies are based originally to a short story but the Chin Siu Tung movie is more influenced by the previous movie than the original story.

This is truly a direct remake. That ok that there’s more action and fantasy in the Ching Siu Tung movie but the script is in lots of point very identical. There’s even a song for the drunken taoist in the original movie. And all these elements are missing in the short story. Telling that a movie is a remake is not a way to tell that the later one is inferior. It’s just a fact. A Chinese Ghost Story is a better movie than The Enchanting Shadow especially by the standard of today. And there’s lots of good remakes.
