- I SELL THE DEAD: Review

Director: Glenn McQuaid. Review: Adam P.
Combining zombies, aliens, grave robbing, and lots of dark humor, I Sell the Dead is a bizarre and interesting gem of a film. Much like Army of Darkness, this film combines the undead with the dark ages, and sprinkles on the laughs as a nice garnish.
The film opens with one of the lead characters, Willy Grimes (Larry Fessenden), being be-headed by means of a guillotine. We then see his partner in crime Arthur Blake (Dominic Monaghan) sitting in the prison waiting for his turn to be executed. A priest, played by Ron Perlman, visits Blake to record his final thoughts before he meets his maker. The rest of the film is told through Blake’s words, as he describes the awful sort of profession he and his partner partook. He recounts everything from the first grave he robbed, to the first time the dead started coming back to life. This odd occurrence proved to be quite lucrative to the two grave robbers. People thought that these zombies were the key to eternal life, and were willing to pay handsomely for their capture.
The film seems to be tipping its hat to the horror comics of the 40’s and 50’s by combining humor with horror, and even turning the characters into drawings during transitions. This actually works well during the movie, and adds to the bizarre storyline. Writer/director Glen McQuaid paints a vivid and oddly engrossing picture of a grey world with some very colorful characters. I can honestly say I wasn’t expecting much with this movie. With a less than impressive cast, low budget, and unknown writer/director, this movie didn’t have a lot going for it. I was very surprised at how entertaining and well made this movie was. With a very interesting story, and a nice twist at the end, I Sell the Dead is sure to please horror fans and film buffs alike. This movie has cult classic written all over it.
