Director: Kim Sang-jin. Review: Adam Wing.
The term ‘fighting over a girl’ has never been more appropriate, let alone more literal, then here in Kim Sang-jin’s (Attack The Gas Station) quirky Korean comedy Kick The Moon. Gi-dong ( Cha Seung-won) and Young-joon (Lee Sung-jae) went to the same school together, Gi-dong was the tough, cool as a cucumber gang leader at Gangsan High. Young-joon was, well, the kind of vegetable used to make your plate look colourful - that would be tasteless, unwanted and left to rot then. He did get good grades in class though, not many vegetables are known for that. There’s a joke about root vegetables here somewhere but I’ll try to avoid mathematical grocery puns for now. The kids are all grown up and how things have changed, Gi-dong has left his fighting days behind him to become a well-respected teacher. Young-joon is admired too, but that’s probably because he’ll carve you up into small pieces if you don’t play nice. In a surprising twist of fates it’s Young-joon who became the certified gangster type, and after the two ‘friends’ are reunited it’s not long before they’re at each other’s throats again. Lets not forget though that this is a story about a girl (aren’t they all?), and Ju-ran spends most of her time serving noodles. The rest of her day is devoted to bailing out little brother Ju-sup from the local police station. He’s not getting good grades either, that goes without saying, but he sure does idolise Young-joon. Like his hero, he wants to become a gangster. Not quite sure what his sister would make of that but he spends most of the movie trying to improve his grades (Young-joon doesn’t like thick people) and well, I guess that would be fighting then. You’ve probably gathered by now that there’s more than a little brawling involved in Kick The Moon...Continue reading review.
