- What happened to THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE WEIRD?
- Posted by Deljhp - 09/11/09 at 01:12 PM
This week sees the release of Ji-Woon Kim’s anarchic Western action adventure The Good, the Bad, and the Weird in Russian, marking its appearance in pretty much the last major (bar one) territory on the planet. The news has sparked us to reopen our every so often “whatever happened to” feature, with a question that’s been bugging us for months. Will 'The Good The Bad And The Weird' ever get released in the U.S?
Of course in some ways, the question is now somewhat irrelevant. Considering the film opened in Korea over one and a half years ago - with a large amount of buzz in the U.S online genre press - most in the States who knew about the movie and really wanted to see it, have had ample time to buy it on imported DVD, Blu-ray, or worst case scenario (in terms of lost revenue to the producers) Torrent it.
Who exactly owns/owned the America rights to “Good Bad” is now something of a mystery. Last word is, it was picked up by 'IFC films,' but look on their site and there’s no mention of it anywhere. Whoever does/did hold the rights, hasn’t just missed the boat now, they’re pretty much watching it coming back the other way. With memory of the film fading fast, bang goes a ton of free publicity for the film, and many Americans are still missing out on seeing one of the best, most entertaining Korean movies in ages. A real shame if that stays the case.
